4th Grade Math

4th Grade Math

In this post I am going to explore what students in 4th grade are expected to learn and know. We saw how much of a jump 3rd grade math was, but in 4th grade the students take a huge leap forward. It is extremely important for the students success that they really have a solid mathematical foundation. It would be a good idea to have a pre-assessment for the students on the first day. Knowing all the students strengths and weaknesses in the beginning could help save time and frustration!
This is an example of a pre-assessment

What are students expected to know going into 4th grade:

1      1.  Understand multiplication and division. They should know strategies for multiplication and                      division within 100.
2      2.  Understand unit fractions.
3      3.  Understand rectangular arrays.
4      4.  Understand area
5      5.  Be able to describe and analyze two-dimensional shapes.

What should students in 4th grade learn:

        1. Use data to make a graph and interpret information in a graph
        2. Compare large numbers.
        3. Understand negative numbers.
        4. Multiply 3 and 4 digit numbers, and multiply with 0.
        5. Find common multiples
        6. Understand prime and composite numbers.
        7. Fractions- improper fractions and mixed numbers, add and subtract fractions, reduce fractions,                    convert decimals to fractions.
        8. Understand decimals.
        9. Understand lines, rays, angles, polygons and the area of a rectangle.
      10. Solve a multi-step word problem.

_________________________________________________________

The math curriculum in 4th grade is pivotal to the future success of a student. As I am looking at each grade and what the students need to know I see it as a stair case, or rather multiple staircases. Pre-K-2 grade are steps that lead up to the first level, grades 3 and 4 lead up to another level and so on. As students move up the staircase the challenges become greater, which is why it is very important to move up slowly. Once they have mastered a level they can move forward.
